- All that it tells us is that the act of tʾby was prohibited at RḤBT during the celebration of the panēgyris of TRʿT; but there is almost unlimited scope for possible prohibitions on such an occasion. However, some slight help is available in the place-name. While this is a toponym attested in a considerable number of different places, both its derivation (...) and its occurence strongly suggest that it was a normal name for a wide open space adjecent to a town, where large assemblies of people can conveniently meet, and which would be suitable for a tribal panēgyris. Now in the Islamic pilgrimage, there is precisely such a gathering outside the town, namely at ʿArafāt on 9 Dhū ʾl-Ḥijjah. Some pilgrims spend the previous night there, and it is quite customary to erect tents for shelter during the day; but it is strictly forbidden to stay there longer, and once the wuqūf has been completed, they must hurry back to Mecca. (...) It could be suggested that this is the implication of the prohibition in R 4176.

- Ghul here had 'Boasting of ancestors', as liable to lead to feuding. The doubt about this arises from the undoubted fact that the Sayhadic peoples set far less store on naṣab (genealogical chains) than the central arabian tribes. The alternative suggested in the Dictionary 'lingering' (after the conclusion of the pilgrimage) is suggested by the rule that once the 'standing' on Arafat is completed, pilgrims must hurry back to Mecca and lay aside their ʾiḥrām, and in no circumstances may they stay at Arafat until the following day
